March Madness

Hmmm, where to start.....Well David had an ear infection, and was on antibiotics. After being off the antibiotics for 2 days he perforated his ear drum. Not so much fun. During this time Lillian complained her ear hurt, which she never does (and last time she complained about it she had a ear infection). So I figured I should bring her in....she had a ear infection. Was put on OMNICEF, a nasty antibiotic I will never give her again.....because she ended up with serum sickness from it. She broke out in ridiculous hives 9 days after being on it. The rash would not go away, she would not stop itching it. Then her joints got all swollen. Her hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Her knees were hurting her so bad she could not even walk. So there were many trips back and forth to the doctors and they kept saying it was a reaction. I was just scared that the leg pain would be longlasting. Luckily it was not...but during the trips to the doctors they did a throat culture for strep and the flu. and she had strep, so they put her on amoxicillian too....The last Friday morning of this whole craziness, Lillian woke up at 3am screaming because her legs hurt so bad. (she never wakes up for anything), so it must have been bad. Gave her some advil for the pain and about after an hour she finally settled down and went back to sleep. Saturday morning same thing, but this time there was no calming her down, and the drugs were not helping ease the pain either, so I called the peditrician at 6am Saturday morning (I felt bad, but I guess that is why they are on call). She said to alternate the advil and tylenol every 3 hours, and they would call me later to see how she was doing. By 10 she was still in a lot of pain so we called the DR again, and she said to bring her to Yale Children's ER in New Haven. So I dropped David off with Dave's parents and we proceeded to New Haven to have her checked out. She was still not walking, and extremely grumpy because it was hurting her. At 1pm they checked her out, we saw a couple different doctors, and they did some blood work. They wanted to rule out Rheumatic Fever (which is bad), so they did a EKG. Oh my goodness, she did not like that...the nurse was trying to make a game out of it by saying look you can put these stickers all over you, etc. Well we tried doing that twice, it was a major fight, everyone was heated. So they had to mildly sedate her. So then about 15 minutes after taking it, she was acting a bit drunk and they had no problem doing the EKG a couple of times. The results came back fine.... so no Rheumatic Fever, thank goodness. The doctors were trying to get a hold of a rheumetologist to see what they thought of the bloodwork results and what course they should go to get Lillian feeling better after this 2 1/2 week battle. They tried paging the guy twice, then come to find out he was in a car accident and wasn't returning the page....mean while we were packing our bags up because it sounded like we would be leaving soon....just kidding. So they prescribed predisonole (a steroid) for 6 days, and rotating between tylenol and advil for the pain. We finally left around 10pm. What a long day. The days after this she was much better, only once did she complain of knee pain and the rash comes and goes, but less frequently and not to the extent that it did before. I had to lay on Lillian to make her take the steroid, one night she pucked it all back up on me, including her dinner, and the last night of being on it she decided to take it all by herself...are you kidding me.

This has been quite a journey which I would not wish upon anyone, but I have learned quite a few things along the way....Lillian is never having OMNICEF again, she is a mad crazy person when taking benadryl, work is the furthest thing from your mind when you have a sick child, I can remain cool and collected when times get crazy, Lillian will still love me even though I have to wrestle her down to take medicine and raise my voice to her when she won't calm down, Lillian is a tough cookie (even when she was limping around she said her leg didn't hurt her).

When we first got into the hospital After given the mild sedating drug....This is a oxygen sensor which she was playing with that she stuck on her own nose :) After the drugs wore off she was her normal goof ball self, and was even trying to walk around by the time we left late that night.
So that was our March Madness.....

Go UCONNN Men!!!! You guys played great!

The poor grandbabies have had a rough winter, especially Lillian and Chelsea. So hard to know they were so sick and not be able to be there. Sarah, you did a great job naming this your March Madness.
